It was real cold this weekend, with highs just north of freezing. (As always, I do not care to read sneering comments from anyone living in Chicago or Buffalo. I live in south Louisiana and that is very cold for here.) It was dry though, so we weren't worried about losing power and never did. I bought myself a couple of bottles of monoi oil last month and slather it on after every shower--I smell fantastic--but that can't help my hangnails or static-y hair.

Still, I will never seriously complain about winter in Louisiana, where summer should count as a crime against humanity. Winter only really lasts like, 6 weeks.

Saturday I made breakfast, then went to the pharmacy, Asian Market, and Rouses. I really want to wash my car and clean the inside, but the carwash I like to use is across the street from the Youngsville Rouses. That's the opposite side of Lafayette from where I needed to be; plus I have no idea which Saturday their Mardi Gras parade is. The route goes entirely around the grocery store, and they've had the crowd barriers in place since the first week of Carnival. So I'm just avoiding that store on principle until Lent starts.

At home I put away the groceries, baked a batch of dog treats, cut Penny's front nails, and then painted them.

Yes, I said I painted my dog's toenails.

Pawdicure

It's formulated for dogs, it's non-toxic and water soluble and will just come off on its own in a few days (although it might last longer since it's been so dry). It comes in a pen and dries in seconds. I knew they made nail polish that was safe for dogs and always thought it would be harmless silly fun; turns out it's super cheap, I paid about $6 for an 8 color set.

I used to have a William Wegman print I bought at SF MOMA on a high school field trip where he'd painted one of his weimaraner's toenails pink. He had it against a backdrop of a slightly darker grey, so all that really stood out was the dog's eyes and its pink toenails. Of course when I think of the breed now the first thing that comes to mind is Best In Show. We met at Starbucks. Not at the same Starbucks but we saw each other at different Starbucks across the street from each other. Which reminds me, RIP Catherine O'Hara. Damn, 71??

David made very a Hobbit-coded supper, some green onion fresh sausages with brown mustard and roasted cherry tomatoes on sourdough toast. Afterwards I re-watched Civil War, which is back on HBO. You know I'm a very "art is subjective" person, but I think most people who don't like that movie have just fundamentally misunderstood it. It doesn't matter what weird confluence of events made allies of Texas and California, because the movie is not actually about the titular war. It's about conflict journalism in general, and those 4 people--allĀ  at various stages in their journalism career--in particular. You see from the first scene that Jessie will always put herself in danger to get the shot, and Lee will always put herself in danger to keep Jessie from getting killed. And Jessie was always documenting Lee as much as she was the war.

If you get that and still don't like the movie, then fine.

Sunday I made cornbread pancakes and bacon for breakfast, then put on Dateline, vacuumed my bedroom, changed the sheets, and did some laundry. After showering I baked an almond cake--I discovered a mostly full bag of almond flour in the pantry that's good for a few more months and am trying to use it up--did some dinner prep, made avocado toast for Mom, and had some greyhounds (Texas grapefruits are currently $1 at Rouses) and white cheddar Cheez-Its while I read. I'm still reading Endymion, mostly because I had stopped it to re-read a couple of different books. I struggled with the first 3rd of the book because it was essentially a series of spaceship chases between our heroes and the theocracy hunting them down and it felt repetitive. It's better now; although it's kind of still a bunch of chases they're at least on different planets so it's more interesting. Like yes the Magisterium--sorry, "the Pax"--is still chasing them, but also there's weird birds and fish and different colored skies and one planet that's a giant ocean.

Dinner was the warming winter soup from my Studio Ghibli cookbook (from Whisper of the Heart.

Warming winter soup

I used chicken stock instead of daishi though, because Mom and David don't really love that as a base unless it's miso soup. They were both very impressed with my carrot stars.

After supper I watched the other new episode of Dateline, then the season finale of The Night Manager. Uh, that was quite the cliffhanger so I assume there's another season planned?!
