I think probably because in the back it always lists every single festival happening in the entire state for the two month period each issue covers. But I like to flip through it too; there's usually at least one article that is, as the kids today say, relevant to my interests.
In the most recent issue there was an article about a husband and wife photographer team, Leslie Addison and George Yerger, who photograph throughout the Mississippi Delta and south Louisiana. They often use plastic cameras; the article didn't specify but I can tell just looking at the photographs that at least some of them were taken with a Holga. They're shown at the Cole Pratt Gallery in New Orleans and the average price of one of their prints is $750-$800.
I really like their photographs, but... am I blowing smoke up my own ass, or... are my photos just as good?
By which I mean, just as well-composed and -exposed and interesting to look at? ...of course, I don't develop or print myself. Not that I can't, I just don't currently have the equipment or the room to use it. I send my medium format out to Dwayne's, and as for my 35mm: Walgreen's. They know fuck-all about photography, which works in my favor because they don't try to "correct" my technologically backwards stuff.
I've been thinking of opening an Etsy store for my prints for like, more than a year. I keep putting it off out of laziness/forgetfulness.
Maybe I should contact the Cole Pratt Gallery, too.
I think the reason that photography is the art form that's attracted me -- besides the fact that I can't paint or draw for shit -- is selfishness. You can sell or give away a hundred prints, and always have another one for yourself. Same thing with needlework: I always keep the patterns.
